Memory Low (2019)

Digital collage and animated GIF

Memory Low is a series of works made in response to a long-forgotten ceremonial object found in the underground city of Cappadocia, Turkey. The work reimagines this object as an effigy of an ancient cat god, poorly fabricated with misremembered proportions. This act of misremembering, or misrepresentation, was combined with a series of found drawings from an online forum thread where users were asked to draw a cat with their eyes closed. Combined together into a kind of digital cave painting, the drawings are overlaid onto an image made through 'content-aware' processes; a computer's speculation on how it should depict a cat.
